You're invited to Ferrara Fiorenza PC's School Law Briefing on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 from 8:00 am - 11:00 am at the Ramada Inn, 21000 NYS Route 3, Watertown, New York.  The program will focus on the following:

  • Never Settle for Second Best:  Building a Teaching Staff that Makes You Want to "Stand Up and Cheer" -  We tend to hire teachers with the understanding that they will receive tenure as long as they receive satisfactory evaluations and don’t commit any serious offenses. Consequently, tenure becomes something the teacher can lose rather than something the teacher must earn. Treating tenure as the default outcome, instead of as the extraordinary privilege it is, results in some teachers with notable weaknesses or deficiencies getting through the screening process. They become our problem teachers later in their careers.

This briefing will show how to require teachers to earn tenure by meeting high standards of performance and professional conduct during probation. It will describe the best practices to follow in deciding which probationary teachers should be retained or dismissed at the end of their first, second or third years of probation. It will provide a method for testing whether a tenure-eligible teacher is likely to maintain high standards of performance and professional conduct after receiving tenure.

  • When the Government Knocks on the School House Door:  How to Respond Effectively when State and Federal Agencies Investigate or Audit your District - This presentation will provide practical advice regarding what to do, and what not to do, when your school district finds itself the subject of a complaint or audit by a governmental agency.  Attendees will be informed regarding types of investigations and audits they are likely to encounter and gain confidence in their ability to effectively respond, manage and negotiate the process.

Who Should Attend?

This presentation is for Board Members, Superintendents, Assistant Superintendents, Principals and other related school personnel.
