Session One:
But we’ve always done it that way….
This program is designed to correct and dispel some long-standing school district practices or common missteps that our office has encountered over the past few years.
Administrators and board members will learn in this program the best practices on how to avoid these mistakes and properly handle these issues. For example, does your Board of Education accept resignations from Civil Servants before they are deemed effective? Does your Business Official or District Clerk count the absentee ballots for your annual meeting, or at a referendum?
This presentation will highlight areas of school district operations where common missteps often occur but are not always noticed or corrected.

Session Two:
Promoting DEI in Your District While Preserving Appropriate Control Needed to Foster Civility and Reasonable Decorum, and First Amendment Considerations
As school districts across the state endeavor to comply with state and federal recommendations and mandates aimed at promoting DEI objectives, well-intentioned efforts may result in the creation of “forums” for speech at school that could trigger divisive debates and even disruption to the learning environment.
This presentation will assist attendees in understanding how the First Amendment’s “viewpoint neutrality” requirement may impact and inform a district’s approach to DEI promotion at school and show how to close down “forums” that may have been created by accident or no longer serve their original purpose.
This presentation will also include a discussion of recent court decisions that may impact how school districts endeavor to diversify their workforce and offer practical tips to doing so in accordance with applicable legal constraints.

Session Three:
Student Discipline, Tutoring and the Code of Conduct
This program will review recent trends in the commissioner’s decisions and provide administrators with best practices to properly handle student discipline, restorative justice and to align student discipline with your code of conduct and the requirements from New York State.
